Rectosigmoidoscopy is an endoscopic procedure that allows examination of the final part of the colon (the sigmoid) and the rectum. It is a key tool for quickly and safely diagnosing causes of bleeding, polyps, or inflammation.
It is primarily indicated for investigating rectal bleeding, hemorrhoids, changes in stool shape, anal pain, or for monitoring previously detected polyps in the lower colon.
Unlike a complete colonoscopy, this procedure is shorter. It is performed by inserting a flexible sigmoidoscope that captures high-resolution images, allowing the doctor to evaluate the mucosa with complete clarity.
Preparation is simpler than for a colonoscopy. Generally, it only requires the application of an enema a couple of hours before the procedure to clean the final area of the intestine.
