Colonoscopy Preparation: Step-by-Step Guide

It is very common for patients to feel more anxious about the preparation than about the procedure itself. However, proper preparation is essential for the physician to clearly observe the colon walls and provide an accurate diagnosis.

At CEGAS, we want to make this process as manageable as possible. Here we explain how to prepare in a simple way to ensure your procedure is successful.

Why is colon cleansing so important?

For the physician to detect polyps or any small abnormality, the colon must be completely clean. If residue remains, the procedure may not be conclusive and would need to be repeated. Therefore, following the dietary instructions is the most important part of your commitment to your health.

Days before: The dietary change

A few days before the examination (generally 2 or 3 days), you should begin a low-fiber diet. This means avoiding:

  • Fruits with seeds or peels.

  • Raw vegetables.

  • Whole grains, legumes (beans, lentils), and nuts.

During these days, it is ideal to eat simple proteins such as grilled chicken or fish, white rice, white bread, and eggs.

The day before the procedure: Clear liquids only

This is the most important day. You will not be able to eat solid foods. Your diet will be limited to clear liquids that keep you hydrated and provide some energy:

  • Water and strained fruit juices (without pulp) that are not red or purple in color.

  • Clear broths (liquid only, without vegetables or meat).

  • Clear gelatin (avoiding red or purple colors).

  • Tea or coffee without milk.

The cleansing process

The physician will prescribe a special solution (laxative) to cleanse the colon. It is normal to need to use the bathroom very frequently after taking it. Our recommendation is to spend that afternoon at home, relaxed and near a bathroom. Be sure to drink plenty of water during this process to avoid dehydration.

What to expect on the day of the examination at CEGAS?

When you arrive at our clinic at Plaza San Fernando, the team will receive you and prepare you for the procedure.

  • Sedation: The colonoscopy is performed under sedation, which means you will be asleep and will not feel any discomfort.

  • Duration: The procedure typically lasts between 30 and 45 minutes.

  • Companion: Since you will be under the effects of sedation, it is mandatory to come with a companion who can safely take you home.

Preparing correctly ensures that your examination is effective and that you will not need to repeat the process soon. If you have questions about medications you are currently taking, always consult with us before beginning the preparation.
